University Plaza

A major learning and recreational facility

Atmos were pleased to be selected by Naylor Love Construction as mechanical services contractor on the University Plaza Building One.

The $45 million Oamaru stone-clad building, linking the University Plaza and the new Forsyth Barr stadium, will be a major learning and recreational facility next to a world-class covered stadium. It will contain teaching spaces for the Foundation Studies department, Unipol sports centre including two gymnasiums, cardio weights and multipurpose team sports areas, and a cafe for students and the public.

The $4 million mechanical services installation has been designed to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, whilst still delivering a comfortable internal environment.

The mechanical ventilation system uses roof mounted air handling units to supply outdoor airflow rates substantially higher than building code requirements, to provide maximum free cooling. The units incorporate heat recovery technology to further reduce energy consumption.

Air cooled heat pump units deliver heating and chilled water through mild steel reticulation pipework systems to air handling units, fan coil units, radiators and under-floor heating systems.

The whole building is controlled by a state of the art, digital building management system, which will communicate with the Otago University's campus wide control and monitoring system.
